The Challenge
The core challenge of Movement in Tapestry was translating the tactile, dimensional nature of Silvia Heyden’s woven work into a cohesive printed object while preserving the movement, rhythm, and material sensitivity central to her practice.
Developed in collaboration with the Heyden family, the book was conceived as both a celebration of Silvia Heyden’s life and a carefully constructed archival document spanning more than 200 pages of woven works, drawings, sketches, and process material.
Production & Color
Textile work presents unique challenges in print, particularly in preserving subtle color variation, texture, and depth across reproduction. Extensive proofing, printer coordination, and iterative color refinement were required to ensure the final printed pages remained faithful to the original pieces.
From image preparation through final press approval, the production process focused on maintaining consistency and fidelity across hundreds of reproductions while balancing the tactile qualities of the original woven work with the limitations of print.
Editorial Structure
Beyond documentation, the design sought to reflect the same sense of movement and structure present within Heyden’s work itself. Layout pacing, sequencing, whitespace, and image relationships were approached with restraint, allowing the material to breathe while maintaining a clear editorial rhythm throughout the book.
